The picture is TWICE as sharp as HDTV broadcasts but the Blu-ray players are backwards compatible with non-HDTVS, offering improved color and clarity over DVD (even on an analog TV). Check out this chart:

And the sound is completely UNCOMPRESSED. The audio is much more realistic than DVD or CD. Just like an "MP3" (with all that "compression") doesn't sound as clear as a CD, the Blu-ray Disc far out-performs the DVD in the audio department. Click here to see how to get a demo in your home town:

I've owned a Bose Acoustimass 15 system for 8 years. It's a decent system when it comes to aesthetics and size. Sound quality is pretty good but not great. The bass module does not really hit low and Bose satellites do not have tweeters. You can definitely hear that there are upper frequencies that you are not getting.

For 8 years the Bose has pretty much sounded lacking to me. It's better for a smaller room.

I am currently looking to upgrade to a Paradigm Monitor Series setup.

The Bose will probably go up on eBay.

Go to a real audio dealer and not one of those box stores like Best buy or Circuit City and see how many Bose speakers they carry. I have been heavily involved in home and car audio for 25 years and can't think of a good thing to say about Bose home systems. Spend some time before you spend your money, take a cd with you that you are familiar with and that will be demanding ( bass and treble, voice, soft and loud passages) and don't be afraid to insist that the salesperson allow you to tweak the settings on their equipment so you can be sure the sound isn't all doctored up. Speakers by far make the biggest difference in sound and enjoyment in your system so if you take the time to pick something good you will be able to enjoy it for years to come.

Blu-ray is essentially the next generation of DVD. A blu-ray disc looks like a regular DVD but must be played in a blu-ray player, not a regular DVD player.

Blu-ray discs can hold much more data than regular DVDs, which makes them good for carrying movies in HD.

If you don't have a HDTV yet, then don't worry about blu-ray. While you can use a blu-ray player with a regular TV, it won't look any better than your existing DVD player and DVDs.

Even so, regular DVD is not going anywhere. Expect to see new releases on BOTH DVD and blu-ray for the foreseeable future.

If you do decide to buy a blu-ray player, it will also play your existing DVDs - so you lose nothing by upgrading.

It's a new technology, and as is usually the case, is expensive at first. I expect as the prices of the players fall and the range of Blu-ray discs available increases, there will be a greater uptake of the technology - and disc prices will fall.

I also expect Blu-ray will be the last time we'll be buying discs, downloads will be the way in the future.

BOSE is a great company that produces higher quality home theater systems that are easy to setup and operate. This is exactly what they designed to do. If you are looking for something that you won't have to spnd hours fine tuning, adjusting speaker volume levels, Bi-amping tower speakers, calibrating the direction they are firing the sound in, and adjusting things in your receiver, than BOSE is for you.

Yes, there are better home theater setups out there that you can put together for around the same price. Onkyo receivers and Klipsch F series speakers comliment each other very well. If you are looking at doing this, consider the Onkyo TXSR806 paired with the Klipsch F3 towers for your front speakers, the F2 towers for the rears, the C2 for the center channel and the SUB12 for the sub. Comliment these with some HDMI hookups from your sources into your receiver for lossless audio, use the calibration mic to fine tune the receiver and you have yourself a very high end system with a very dynamic range.

For a less expensive home theater option, try the new Monster speaker package. They are very impressive for the price and are smaller than traditional tower speakers. Plus, you can change out the paneling on either side to match any kind of decor you are trying to acieve in your entertainment area.

Bose is the option for those who want high quality sound without the hassle of setting it all up. They have a technology called ADAPTiQ which will calibrate itself to sound the best in any type of environment, room size/shape, it also takes into account any furniture in the room to give you the best possible sound for your room specifically. I attended a Bose training and they demoed this technology by covering every speaker with a metal bucket in efforts to create the worst environment for a home theater setup. They turned the Bose system oon and naturally it sounded absolutely terrible. As soon as they switched the ADAPTiQ on, you would never be able to guess that there were buckets over all the speakers. It's pretty impressive.

All in all, you have a lot of options, it just depends on available space for speakers and your interest in taking the time to piece a system together and set it all up.
