u can with a xbox 360 so probably NOT with a PS3 since xbox 360s are better
You can do it – for good 5.1 sound you will need an optical cable. You can only get stereo (2 channel) with the standard rca adaptor.
I think the best way to do the connection though is with the HDMI cable – if you hgave the proper connections on your theather system – I would suggest HDMI – but everything is pricey.
If you have new Onlyo reciever – TX-Sr605 or 805, it has HDMI 1.3, so all you need is HDMI cable between PS3 and Onkyo. And one from Onkyo to TV.
If not – optical digitl cable from PS3 to Onkyo
